Buying an altcoin index through a broker
You can buy an altcoin index investment through Virtune Crypto Altcoin Index ETP at a broker offering the product. It combines a selection of altcoins into one listed security, with Bitcoin and Ether excluded.
What does the index include?
The Altcoin Index rules select up to ten leading eligible altcoins, excluding Bitcoin and Ether. The selected assets receive equal weights, and the index is rebalanced quarterly. This means a smaller selected asset has the same starting weight as a larger one at rebalancing.
For example, if two equal-weighted components rise at different rates, their weights drift apart. A rebalance brings them back towards the index's equal-weighting rule. This is an illustration of the process, not a statement about current holdings or returns. The product page shows the assets held now; “up to ten” describes the methodology, not a guaranteed component count.
The exclusion matters: the ETP does not provide Bitcoin or Ether exposure just because those assets are part of the wider crypto market. Its underlying is the Altcoin Index.
Why buy an altcoin index through an ETP?
The product lets you hold the selected altcoins as one investment in your brokerage account. Virtune handles the component holdings and changes to the index, so you do not have to buy each coin, maintain several wallets or trade every component at a rebalance.
Virtune holds the selected crypto-assets with a custodian as collateral for the ETP. You own the security, while those assets back the holding. It is an index ETP, not a fund. How crypto index ETPs work explains selection, weighting and rebalancing.
How to find the ETP at a broker
The product can be found by its full name or ISIN on the broker's platform. The order page shows the listing, trading currency, buy and sell prices and the broker's charges. An exchange listing does not mean every broker offers it, so the product page provides the available broker routes.
VIRALT is its Nasdaq Stockholm ticker, VIRALTE its Nasdaq Helsinki ticker, VRTA its Xetra ticker and ETNVIRALT its Warsaw Stock Exchange ticker. These listings share ISIN SE0023260716.
The Altcoin Index product page brings together available brokers and the current selection.
Account availability and tax treatment depend on your country and account type. The crypto ETP buying guide explains the general purchase process.
Costs of the index investment
The management fee is deducted from the product's value over time. A broker may also charge commission and currency conversion, and the difference between the buy and sell prices is the spread. These are separate costs, so the management fee alone does not describe the full cost of holding the ETP.
Costs when buying Virtune Crypto Altcoin Index ETP
| Cost | Charged by | When |
|---|---|---|
| Brokerage commission | Broker | On every purchase and sale |
| Difference between bid and ask price | Market | On every trade |
| Management fee, 2.50% per year | Issuer | Ongoing, from the product's value |
| Currency conversion | Broker, if applicable | If the product trades in another currency |
Risks to understand
An index can contain several crypto-assets and still fall sharply. The assets can move in the same direction, so spreading the holding across components does not remove crypto-market risk.
Crypto markets continue trading when the exchange is closed. The next ETP quote can therefore differ from the previous close. The security also has issuer and custody risks: if Virtune cannot meet its obligations, recovery depends on the assets held as collateral and the process for enforcing investors' rights. Custody failures or recovery delays can affect the result. These product risks remain part of an index investment.
